At PTM the curriculum is designed to ‘help all children grow so that they can reach the branches to their future’. Through our Early Years we explore

The Early Years curriculum aims to be broad and balanced and relevant for our children. The early development of social and communication skills are at the heart of everyday learning. We value the importance of outdoor learning and physical development. Our enabling environment aims to engage children through active learning and through providing challenge. Partnership with parents is vital in supporting and nurturing our children.

Through our Early Years settings we aim to make learning engaging and enjoyable for all children and provide our children with a range of new experiences. We strive to develop independent learners who are; inquisitive, respectful, successful and have self-belief. We want our children to feel safe, feel valued and to feel motivated.

Our children are at the heart of our Early Years. At Pear Tree Mead our children are happy, creative and respectful. We want our children to challenge themselves, to express themselves, and to try new experiences.

By the end of their time in Early Years we want our children to be ready to move on to the next part of school life. Our core aims are that children:

• Are numerate
• Have good communication skills
• Become increasingly independent
• Enjoy learning
• Explore their creative side

Early Adopter Information

As a school we have decided to become an early adopter of the Early Years Foundation Stage reforms from September 2020. As from September 2021 all Early Years settings will follow a new framework, however we have opted to start using this curriculum this year. We feel that this will give our children the best opportunity in their learning.

The new framework continues to break learning down into the 7 areas of learning; however, the content of these areas has been altered. For some areas there are only a few changes and for some there are more. Mathematics is an area with a lot of changes, in particular, a focus on gaining a deeper understanding of numbers to 10 by the end of Reception.

Our current Reception children will be assessed on the new Early Learning Goals (ELGs). The new framework will not affect the general content of our curriculum, we will still be delivering a topic-based curriculum. However, the way in which our topics are delivered will be altered to meet the expectations of the reforms.
