Pear Tree Mead Dog Mentor

At Pear Tree Mead we are lucky to have a Dog Mentor Numbers.

He is a merle coloured Cockerpoo with a soft and shaggy coat. Numbers has been working in our school since he was 5 months old.

He loves strokes and walks and enjoys it when he has visits from children around the school for their good behaviour.

Numbers has undertaken a monitoring programme called ‘The Dog Mentor’ which has allowed us a structed approach to introducing him into school life. The trainer was blown away with his attitude and calm demeanour.

Numbers has a timetable for the week where he meets classes, individuals for walks and spends time with children that have achieved that week. The children might see Numbers around the school on a daily basis when he takes his walks, greets children in the morning or attending the odd school trip.

There are strict guidelines when approaching the Dog Mentor and the children revisit these in whole school assemblies. There are no obligations for children to interact with Numbers if it is something they are not comfortable with. There are signs and gestures that children can display when he is around the school to show the handlers that they are not wanting contact. This works very well at Pear Tree Mead and Numbers is very respectful of this.
