What are we learning?+

In the Autumn term our experience topic is Rainforests. Before the Summer holidays we spoke with the children about a whole range of questions that they would like to find the answers to, so our experience topic will be based on those questions.



In Science, the children will be learning about movement and feeding. They will find out about the different nutrients in food and what their function is. They will also learn about how animals including humans move.




In PE, the children will be developing their skills in football and rugby. They will be learning about ball handling skills as well as teamwork and tactics.



In Experience children will be learning about the rainforests of the world. They will learn about what lives in the rainforest and how we can look after them for the future.



In computing the children we will be learning about basic computing skills using our brand new laptops. They will also be looking at e-safety and how to stay safe online.




In music the children will be using Charanga to learn about playing the glockenspiel.




In SMSC and PSHE the children will be learning about settling in to their new classes and about overcoming ups and downs in relationships. They will be carrying out activities and discussions about what kinds of actions and behaviours to avoid and how to be a good caring friend or family member.




In English children will be learning about how to read information texts effectively and about how to write their own. Alongside this to support their learning children will be exploring new grammatical concepts and reinforcing those that they have learned previously, such as word class and sentence structure.



In Mathematics we will be carrying out work on place value and understanding the number system. Children will carry out daily activities to help them to improve on their mental strategies, to speed up in their calculations and to see problems presented to them in various forms.



Growth Mind-set

In year 3 and 4 we will be continuing to develop the children’s growth mindset. We will be encouraging the children to be positive learners and develop a good attitude to learning.



House Groups

We are re launching our house groups this year, to keep the house point system interesting and exciting for the children. Aswell as looking at ways the house points are given out in classrooms, to make the system fair to all across the school, we will be issuing a maximum of 5 house points at a time, this was suggested by the school council to make the point awarding consistent.  we have also renamed our 4 house colour groups to:

Daffodil – Yellow

Bluebell – Blue

Clover – Green

Poppy- Red


Children will stay in the same house colour as before, just with the new name. Look out for some house team events, or opportunities to wear the house colours later in the year, we will be working with our school council for ideas.


New Vision

This year we have made the decision not to continue with our  TERRRIFC values and adopt new values and skills  We have worked together with staff and pupils to create these.  Our new vision for the school is ‘ At Pear Tree Mead we help all the children to grow so that they can reach the branches to their future.’  To become a fully grown citizen children need to reach the branches of the Pear Tree.

Each life skill is introduced to the children with a forest animal which sits on a branch.  You should be able to see the tree, animals and skills in classrooms and around the school.




PSHE lessons, assemblies and class times are planned around the branches so that children are taught and reminded of these on a regular basis.  There is a focus on reaching one of the branches each half term.  This half term we will be working on being Respectful with the help of Respectful Mouse.  After half term we will be working with the children on growing in self belief with the help of Self-belief Squirrel.   Please talk to your child about these skills and help them to achieve and work towards them.



Please ensure that the children have their PE kits on their pegs in school all week. The children will be swimming during the Autumn term so they will need a swimming kit with a hat. The cost of swimming is £1.50.

We would like to thank parents for their co-operation in developing the children’s independence and coming in to class on their own. We would like to ask for parents to leave their children at the classroom door and not to enter the classroom as the classrooms will become too congested and may cause a Health and Safety issue. If you have any concerns you need to speak to the classroom teacher about, please tell this to the TA standing at the door who will liaise with the teacher, or see the teacher at the end of the day.


Homework will be set weekly and we will be continuing to use the homework webs for half termly topics. It is extremely important that the children complete their homework as it will consolidate the learning they are doing in class. Remember we do have a homework club which you can sign up for.

We would like to encourage the children to be reading frequently at home, it is very important that your child can not only read fluently but also understand what they have read. Please ensure that your child is not rushing through their books and fully understand them before changing them in the library. You can change your children’s books any day after school in the library.

Please remember to bring your children’s reading books in every day.

How can you help?+

Reading with your child is vital. Research shows that it’s the single most important thing you can do to help your child’s education. It’s best to read little and often, so try to put aside some time for it every day. Think of ways to make reading fun – you want your child to learn how pleasurable books can be. If you’re both enjoying talking about the content of a particular page, linger over it for as long as you like. Books aren’t just about reading the words on the page, they can also present new ideas and topics for you and your child to discuss. Children need to be able to confidently segment and blend the words they are reading, apply a wide range of spelling rules as well as being able to comprehend the content of what they are reading. In years 3/4 we are keen for children to read a wide variety of text and encourage them to read these in addition to their school reading books. For example, children could read magazines, e-books, comics, instruction manuals, menus, catalogues, to name a few.


Tips for helping your child to enjoy books:

  • Encourage your child to pretend to ‘read’ a book before he or she can read words.
  • Visit the library as often as possible – take out CDs and DVDs as well as books.
  • Schedule a regular time for reading – perhaps when you get home from school or just before bed.
  • Buy dual-language books if English isn’t your family’s first language – you can talk about books and stories, and develop a love for them, in any language.
  • Look for books on topics that you know your child is interested in – maybe dragons, insects, cookery or a certain sport.
  • Make sure that children’s books are easily accessible in different rooms around your house and in different formats, such as e-books.
  • Please record in their reading diaries whenever reading at home takes place.
  • The best motivation for your child to become a keen and confident reader is to have a positive role model! So, pick your favourite book up and enjoy a good read!

Children may record for themselves on some occasions. It is important that children have their reading diaries and books at school every day and have the opportunity to change their reading books every day after school in the library. The library is open every day from Monday 14th September 2015 from 3.10-3.30pm.



As with reading, try to make maths as much fun as possible – board games, computer games, puzzles and jigsaws are a great way to start. It’s also important to show how we use maths skills in our everyday lives and to involve your child in this. Identifying problems and solving them can also help your child develop maths skills. If you see him or her puzzling over something, talk about the problem and try to work out the solution together. Don’t shy away from maths if you didn’t like it at school. Try to find new ways to enjoy the subject with your child.



Tips for helping your child to enjoy Maths:


  • Promote a confident attitude to Maths – encourage children to keep trying to come to a solution and explain how they got there.
  • Practice times tables as much as possible. Children in Year 3 need to be able to confidently recall the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 times tables. Year 4 children are expected to know them all by the time they leave LKS2. Regular written and verbal practice, as well as fun interactive games are very helpful in the learning of times tables. Children need to be able to mentally recall them randomly.
  • Take your child shopping and talk about the quantities of anything you buy as well as the cost of items. Encourage children to use coins to buy things, adding up the cost of multiple items, calculating change and becoming confident with money.
  • Point out the different shapes to be found around your home in and the environment.
  • Involve children in everyday activities such as baking and DIY. By allowing children the opportunity to weigh out ingredients and measure lengths and heights, this allows for children to put maths into context in the wider world.



Tips for good homework habits


  • Find a quiet place at home to use as a homework area. It needs a flat surface, a good light source and the right equipment eg pens, pencils, ruler, scissors, glue.
  • Be aware of modern teaching methods, eg in long division – please consult your class teacher or TA if you need support in any areas of the curriculum. Please do not teach your child methods you may have used at school as it could confuse them.
  • Plan a homework timetable and agree on when your child will do their homework.
  • Allow your child to have something nutritional to eat before starting on homework.
  • Discuss homework tasks with your child and discuss how it connects with what they are studying at school so they can see its purpose.
  • Turn off the TV.
  • Don’t give your child the answer in order to get a task finished. Instead, give prompts and
  • Don’t let homework become a chore. Keep it fun and make it a special time that you both look forward to. If parents are positive about homework, then children will also be positive.
