What are we learning?+

Experience

Through our experience topic this term ‘Plastic- Not So Fantastic!’, pupils will learn about the necessity of caring for the environment by examining the water cycle and the effect that plastic and waste is having on the oceans and on wildlife, particularly in geography. Pupils will create sculptures using recycled items that will mimic the artistic style of famous artists they will have studied in art such as Miro and Gaudi.  In history, they will be examining inventions and how they have been adapted- by comparing various civilisations.  The Circulatory System will be covered in science and pupils will be learning about the function of various organs in the body.  In ICT, pupils will be learning about the importance of E-safety and will develop the skill of app design. In PSHE, they will be learning how to manage their feelings and how to deal with conflict in situations.  Music this term will look at the work of STOMP, in which the pupils will create and perform a piece of music using recycled material. They will learn about rhythm and musical notation and how to follow a composition.  In R.E, pupils will be learning about Christianity and Islam, and in French, pupils will learn how to describe their feelings and express their interests.

Homework

This year, we will set homework in Sycamore on a Monday and ask that it is handed in the following Monday. In Hazel class we will be setting homework on a Thursday and ask this it is handed in the following Thursday. Spellings will also be tested on this day.  As always, we would appreciate your support in encouraging your children to complete their homework on time and also to take part in fun and relaxing activities to reward their hard-work, where possible.  Please make sure that the homework is done by your child and handed in on time. Remember that we will continue to offer a homework club, which children can turn up to on the day and also after school.  We are also available to help them if they are unsure of the tasks they need to do. Spellings will be set on Monday and will be tested the following week.

Reading

Reading diaries will be checked on the same day that homework is due and pupils who are evidently reading at home will be rewarded.  We would like to point out that this year there is a slight change to our house point system whereby each house has a different name (which were chosen by our pupils: Poppy , Daffodil, Clover, Bluebell) and the maximum number of points attainable at any given time is 5.

We cannot reiterate enough how important it is that your child is reading at home, as well as practicing times tables, squared and cubed numbers.  These are essential skills for your child to make progress and they will be tested on a weekly basis.

English

In English, we will be looking at a whole range of genres, including non – chronological reports, fantasy story writing, poetry and persuasive writing. By exploring various texts during English sessions, we will give the children the opportunity to discover and experience various different styles of writing for themselves, whilst comparing and contrasting. In the next few weeks, we will also be focusing on speaking and listening skills in the form of debating and speech.

There will be daily SPAG sessions which will focus on spellings or grammatical terms, in preparation for the end of Year 6 SPAG paper.  We ask that you support your child with the learning of spellings at home as this will help them in their writing.

Maths

Maths will continue with practical activities involving Number, Shape, Space and Measure, as well as regular lessons dedicated to developing pupil’s arithmetic skills. We ask that you encourage your child at home to develop their times tables knowledge, including learning their squared and cubed numbers, as this will help greatly in helping them to become more confident learners in the classroom.

PE

This term children will take part in many PE areas, mostly game based activities and gymnastics. Through these games children will be made aware of and use different muscles in the body.

It is essential that children have their PE kit in school every day; this includes an outdoor kit – joggers and a jumper. Please ensure that children have appropriate kit and that all jewellery is removed for lessons.

Swimming will commence for Year 5 this term on Thursday 2oth September and this will continue throughout the autumn term in the school pool.  Year 6 will swim in the summer term at Stewards pool. We ask that you make a contribution to go towards covering the costs of running the pool by a trained instructor.

Growth Mind-set

As always, we will continue to develop children’s ‘Growth Mind-set’, by reminding them to be positive learners and develop a healthy attitude to learning. As a team, we also encourage children to try hard to meet new challenges and push themselves by being more resilient and striving to do their best.

House Groups

We are re launching our house groups this year, to keep the house point system interesting and exciting for the children. Aswell as looking at ways the house points are given out in classrooms, to make the system fair to all across the school, we will be issuing a maximum of 5 house points at a time, this was suggested by the school council to make the point awarding consistent.  we have also renamed our 4 house colour groups to:

Daffodil – Yellow

Bluebell – Blue

Clover – Green

Poppy- Red

Children will stay in the same house colour as before, just with the new name. Look out for some house team events, or opportunities to wear the house colours later in the year, we will be working with our school council for ideas.

New Vision

This year we have made the decision not to continue with our  TERRRIFC values and adopt new values and skills  We have worked together with staff and pupils to create these.  Our new vision for the school is ‘ At Pear Tree Mead we help all the children to grow so that they can reach the branches to their future.’  To become a fully grown citizen children need to reach the branches of the Pear Tree.

Each life skill is introduced to the children with a forest animal which sits on a branch.  You should be able to see the tree, animals and skills in classrooms and around the school.

PSHE

PSHE lessons, assemblies and class times are planned around the branches so that children are taught and reminded of these on a regular basis.  There is a focus on reaching one of the branches each half term.  This half term we will be working on being Respectful with the help of Respectful Mouse.  After half term we will be working with the children on growing in self belief with the help of Self-belief Squirrel.   Please talk to your child about these skills and help them to achieve and work towards them.

SATs

Obviously, this is a very important year for our Year 6 children as they will be sitting the SATS assessments in May, so we would appreciate your help and support with homework and revision tasks.  If you have any concerns, please come in and speak to one of the Year 5/6 team and we will gladly assist you as much as possible. As teachers, we see SATS as a positive stage in their educational development and would ask you to aid your child in feeling this way too.

How can you help?+

Numeracy

It is incredibly important that by Year 5/6, children become very fluent in their times tables. They are the key to successful calculation at this level. They will have regular mental maths tests to prepare them for SATs at the end of the year, and these will also depend on quick times tables recall. Multiplication tables can be learnt at home, and this would help the children immensely in their numeracy sessions.

How to help at home!

Reading

It is still important for Year 5/6 children to read at home to increase their vocabulary and cement their reading comprehension. Reading for pleasure is extremely important to develop fluency so the children should read regularly. A wider range of texts should be encouraged to include non-fiction works. Newspaper articles, bioraphies and autobiographies are all text types which will help the children to access the Year 5/6 curriculum and aid in their written work for the year. We will hear them read occasionally in school, but the main body of their reading practice should take place at home.

Spelling

The children will have regular spelling tests to check their progress and prepare them for the spelling test in SATS. At home, try to encourage your children to learn spellings in a fun way. Here are some good ways…

1) Write them in the air. When they can do it with their normal writing hand, swap to the other hand (this engages both sides of the brain).

2) Write them with your finger on your child’s back, as you say each letter. Then get them to guess what you are spelling. When they are more confident, they can write on your back.

3) Do it in small chunks. If your child is getting bored, cross or stressed, come back to it later. This means that it is best not left to the night before the test.

4) Say them over and over out loud. Encourage the child to repeat after you in a soft/loud/high/low/silly voice. The sillier the better – make them laugh!

5) Get them to teach someone else (younger brother or sister/grandparent). The more people involved in the learning, the higher status it will have.

Use as many of the above as possible. Mix and match and vary it. They include visual, audio and kinaesthetic activities. By varying the learning style, you will be engaging more areas of the child’s brain and they will be more likely to remember the words.
